Newton lies about seven miles east of our office, and it is thirteen villages rather than one place, from Auburndale on the Charles to Oak Hill in the south. We come in along Route 9 for the southern villages and by the Mass Pike corridor for the northern ones, which is why we book Newton calls by village instead of by street.
Newton's villages grew in waves, and each wave left a different garage. The railroad reached West Newton in 1834, and wealthy commuters needed a groom and horses to get to the station; streetcar lines pulled in more suburbs in the late 19th century; the 1920s brought cars within reach of the upper middle class; and Oak Hill stayed in market farming until the prosperity of the 1950s filled it in. In our experience that means an early carriage-house opening, a 1920s detached garage and a 1950s attached bay can sit on the same street.
Seven hills shape the lots as well. On a sloped driveway, snow and ice slide toward the door instead of away from it, which is hard on the bottom section and the seal.

Newton Lower Falls, about four and a half miles from the office, is the closest village, and Newton Center is about seven. The northern villages near the Pike are a longer run, so we group them. In the older villages we expect odd-size openings, low headroom and doors that have never been replaced, and we bring track and hardware to suit.
