Brookline is the farthest of our seven towns, with Brookline Town Hall on Washington Street about ten and a half miles from our office by road. It touches Boston on every side except Newton, and Route 9, called Boylston Street here, is the line between its dense north and its suburban south.
Brookline's garages sit in two different towns. North of Route 9 the housing is urban, with density near 20,000 people per square mile and many apartment buildings from the streetcar era. Just over half of the town's housing is rented, according to its 2024 housing plan, so a lot of doors belong to a landlord, a condo trustee or a management company. South of Route 9 the lots open into single-family neighborhoods and estates around Larz Anderson Park.
Brookline also has nine local historic districts. Exterior changes visible from a public way are reviewed by the Preservation Commission, and its 2025 guidelines advise against metal or plastic garage doors while an in-kind repair or replacement can qualify for an administrative certificate.
